Zambrano, Cubs agree to one-year deal

02/20/2007 - Mesa, AZ (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Chicago Cubs and starting pitcher Carlos Zambrano avoided salary arbitration by agreeing to a one-year contract worth a reported $12.4 million on Tuesday.

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, the deal was reached just before the two sides were to enter into the arbitration hearing. Zambrano, a right-hander, was seeking $15.5 million, while the club was offering $11.025 million.

Zambrano, 25, is still looking to secure a long-term contract despite the signing. He will be an unrestricted free agent after this year and last week voiced his displeasure about not being offered a long-term contract yet. He later backed off those statements.

Zambrano went 16-7 with a 3.41 ERA in 33 starts last season. It was his fourth straight season with at least 31 starts and he has surpassed the 200-inning plateau in each of those years.

For his career, Zambrano is 64-42 with a 3.29 ERA in 167 games, 146 of those starts. He has 865 career strikeouts in 977 innings and has limited opposing hitters to just a .224 batting average.
