Jae An leads Canadian Tour event in Victoria

06/03/2010 - Victoria, BC (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Jae An fired an eight-under 62 Thursday to grab a two-stroke lead after the opening round of the Times Colonist Open.

An, who is in his first full year on tour, matched the course record at Uplands Golf Club. Sonny Skinner first posted a 62 in 1989 and he was later matched by Craig Taylor (2005) and Daniel Im (2008).

American Scott Harrington is alone in second place at minus-six. Kent Eger carded a four-under 66 and he was joined in third place by Jordan Irwin, Richard Lee, Brock Mackenzie and Randall Hutchison.

An started his round on the 10th and he opened with a pair of pars. He collected his first birdie at the 12th and came back with birdies on 15 and 17 to make the turn in three-under.

The 22-year-old carded back-to-back birdies from the second to climb to five- under. An birdied No. 5, but gave that stroke right back with a bogey on the sixth.

An atoned for that mistake with an eagle on the par-five seventh. He ended two clear of the field thanks to a birdie on the par-four eighth.

Andy Walker, who entered the event ranked eighth on the Canadian Tour money list, posted a three-under 67. He was joined in eighth place by Brad Fritsch, Mauricio Molina, John Ellis, Josh Geary, Mitch Gillis, Mike Roters and Aaron Goldberg.

NOTES: This is the fourth official event of the year for the Canadian Tour, but the first in Canada...Two of the first three winners are in the field...Rob Grube, the Riviera Nayarti Classic champion, opened with a two- under 68, while Mexican PGA Championship winner Andy Matthews struggled to a three-over 73.

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- New York Mets pitcher Orlando Hernandez, sidelined at spring training because of arthritis in his neck, is expected to resume throwing on Tuesday.

Hernandez received a cortisone shot Thursday after leaving camp and returning to New York to have his neck examined. The 41-year-old right-hander is penciled in as the team's No. 2 starter behind Tom Glavine.

El Duque's health is a major issue for the Mets, who won the NL East in 2007 and came within one victory of the World Series. Their aging and unsettled rotation is a big question mark this year.

Green enters a crowded backfield in New York, but considering both Thomas Jones and Leon Washington are unhappy about their contract situations and might holdout, the former Iowa product could become the Jets' primary back.

Everyone was shocked when Al Davis took Heyward-Bey with the eighth overall pick in April's draft, but the kid has a tremendous amount of talent and if quarterback JaMarcus Russell takes the next step this year, the former Maryland product could blossom. Plus, Heyward-Bey will be looking to prove the people wrong who said Oakland should have taken Michael Crabtree with the No. 8 pick.
